What's a DEXA Scan and Why Was I Asked to Get One?

by Lauren Lyons, MSPT

The DEXA scan is a quick, painless assessment of the density (strength) of your bones and your risk for fracture. It may have been suggested by one of your care team providers because individuals with CF are at increased risk for lower bone density due to difficulty with absorbing vitamins as well as the CFTR effect on bone modeling.

Childhood and adolescence is the time when most bone formation happens. It is an important time to be sure your bones are healthy. The CFF recommends a DEXA scan at least every 5 years (every 2 years if your results are low) for:

  • All individuals with CF over age 18
  • All individuals with CF over age 8 who have
    • A history of fracture or delayed puberty
    • FEV <50%
    • Ideal body weight <90%
    • Have taken a lot of steroids

You can schedule the DEXA scan on the same day as a clinic visit and they will talk with you about your results at your following visit.

A few things we should ALL be doing to keep healthy bones:

  • Take your prescribed vitamins
  • Be sure you get plenty of foods rich in calcium and vitamin D
  • Exercise regularly, focusing on impact activities like running, jumping, skipping, and plyometrics for bone stimulation.
  • Jumping jacks or hopping after using your VEST can add beneficial impact while helping to clear mucus.

As with any medical concerns, follow up with your Care Team in the clinic.
