Stronger With Every Breath: Nutrition

By Colin Butler, MS, CSCS, ACSM-GEI, EIM and CF Warrior

Nutrition is more than just food, it’s fuel, strength, and healing all in one. With CF, it’s common to face challenges like poor absorption or digestive issues, which can make it harder to get the calories and nutrients you need. The right food choices can support your energy, immunity, muscle-building, and lung health.

Most people with CF need a high-calorie, high-protein diet. Protein helps build muscle and repair tissues (including in your lungs). Think eggs, lean meats, dairy, legumes, or protein shakes if that’s easier.

Healthy fats are your friend too! Avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish like salmon provide dense energy and essential nutrients which are especially important when your body needs extra fuel just to keep up.

Vitamin deficiencies are also something to stay on top of, especially fat-soluble ones like A, D, E, and K. These support everything from your bones to your immune system. Your CF team can help monitor your levels and guide you on supplements.

Remember your enzymes! Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) helps your body absorb fat and protein more effectively. Take them consistently with meals and snacks, and talk to your care team if something feels off.

Also, hydrate! Water helps thin mucus and supports kidney function, digestion, and more. You might need more fluids if you’re exercising or in hot weather.

If you also have CF-related diabetes (CFRD), your nutrition needs get a bit more personalized. A dietitian can help you balance carbs and manage your blood sugar while still getting the calories you need.
