Stronger With Every Breath: Putting it all together

By Colin Butler, MS, CSCS, ACSM-GEI, EIM and CF Warrior

Creating a daily rhythm that includes movement, nutrition, and airway care doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here’s how it might flow:

  • Start your morning with airway clearance and nebulizer treatments.
  • Follow that up with light stretching or a short walk to get your lungs going.
  • Eat a protein-packed breakfast with your enzymes and plenty of fluids.
  • Keep snacks, enzymes, and water on hand if you’re at school or work.
  • Plan a quick strength training session a few times a week, resistance bands or light weights are great.
  • Fuel up with balanced, high-calorie meals throughout the day.
  • Prioritize rest when your body needs it, especially if you’re fighting an infection.
  • Use a journal or app to track how you’re feeling, what you’re eating, and how your treatments are going, it can help you and your care team spot patterns and make tweaks.

Managing CF is a lifelong journey, but it’s also a daily opportunity to invest in yourself. Every time you move your body, clear your lungs, or choose a nourishing meal, you’re building a stronger foundation for your future.

Even on tough days, small actions, like five minutes of breath work or a high-protein snack, can make a real difference. You don’t have to do it perfectly. You just have to keep showing up.

With the right support, a little consistency, and compassion for yourself along the way, you can create a routine that helps you feel stronger, more capable, and more connected to your health, one breath, one step, and one day at a time.

Before making any changes, always check in with your CF care team.
