Eating Socially with Cystic Fibrosis: Enjoying Summer Gatherings

By Kay Vavrina, RD

Summer is filled with opportunities to spend time with friends and family. From backyard barbecues and pool parties to picnics in the park and neighborhood cookouts, food is often at the center of these events. For people with cystic fibrosis (CF), enjoying these events can sometimes require a little extra planning, but it shouldn’t keep you from having fun.

Plan Ahead

Before heading out, think about the timing of the event and how long you’ll be away from home. Pack any medications you’ll need, including pancreatic enzymes, and consider bringing a small cooler with snacks if you’re unsure what food will be available.

Some portable snack ideas include:

  • Cheese and crackers
  • Trail mix
  • Protein bars
  • Peanut butter sandwiches
  • Greek yogurt (kept cold)
  • Beef jerky
  • Nuts and dried fruit

Having a backup option can reduce stress and help you meet your nutrition needs.

Remember Your Enzymes

One of the easiest things to forget during a busy social event is taking pancreatic enzymes. Between conversations, games, and activities, it’s easy to get distracted.

Consider:

  • Keeping enzymes in a bag, pocket, or phone case
  • Setting a reminder on your phone
  • Letting a trusted friend or family member know they can help remind you if needed

Remember, enzymes work best when taken with meals and snacks containing fat or protein.

Stay Hydrated

Summer heat increases fluid and salt losses through sweat, which can be especially important for people with CF.

Bring a refillable water bottle and consider beverages that contain electrolytes if you’re spending extended time outdoors.

Salty snacks such as pretzels, popcorn, nuts, or crackers can also help replace sodium lost through sweating.

Navigate the Buffet with Confidence

Social events often feature buffet-style meals. Rather than focusing on what you “should” or “shouldn’t” eat, think about building a meal that is satisfying, enjoyable, and nourishing.

Look for foods that provide:

  • Protein (burgers, chicken, hot dogs, pulled pork)
  • Healthy fats (cheese, avocado-based dishes, dressings)
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Carbohydrates for energy

It’s okay to enjoy traditional summer favorites. Food is part of the social experience, and enjoying a slice of watermelon, a scoop of potato salad, or a favorite dessert can be part of a balanced approach.

Practice Food Safety

Outdoor gatherings can present food safety challenges, especially during hot weather.

Be cautious with:

  • Mayonnaise-based salads left out for long periods
  • Dairy products that have not been kept cold
  • Foods sitting in the sun for more than two hours (or one hour if temperatures exceed 90°F)

When in doubt, choose freshly served foods or items that have been properly chilled.

Focus on the Experience

While nutrition is important, social activities are too. Sharing meals with others can support emotional well-being, reduce feelings of isolation, and create lasting memories.

Whether you’re attending a family reunion, a baseball game, a beach day, or a neighborhood barbecue, remember that the goal is not perfection, it’s participation and having fun. With a little preparation, people with CF can enjoy all the flavors and fun that summer has to offer.

CF Summer Tip:

Pack a “social event kit” with enzymes, a water bottle, electrolyte packets, sunscreen, and a few favorite snacks. Having everything in one place makes it easier to focus on enjoying the day rather than worrying about your nutrition plan.
