Batch it up!

By Stacey Fogerty-Brown

Fall is here and it’s back-to-school time. That means life gets busy with school, sports, trips and activities. Fueling you or your child with cystic fibrosis’ body is key to maintaining overall health, growth, development, and most of all energy!

One of the best tricks to eating nourishing foods on-the-go is preparation.

We tend to make quick, less nutrient-dense choices when we are in hurry to catch the bus or grab a quick snack after an activity. To help you prep, and make it budget-friendly, here’s quick tips to batch cook (aka make large amounts to use for later). This way, you’ll have access to the right foods to fuel you or your child throughout the day.

1. Buy ingredients in bulk. Buying this way can often save you on the cost per ounce, pound, item, etc.

2. Use frozen fruits and vegetables. Frozen will often save you more and can often be more nutrient-dense (locking in nutrients before they are lost to over-ripening).

3. Use canned goods. These have a very long shelf life, and leftovers can be saved in the fridge or frozen for later if needed.

4. Use plant proteins like beans and lentils. Full of fiber and micronutrients as well, these are a great way to bulk up your batch meals.

5. Use lower-cost animal proteins like chicken and eggs where you can. Many places also offer whole chickens, which can be broken down at home which saves you some money.

6. Compare your grocery store prices. Sometimes the cheaper option isn’t always at your go-to shop.

7. Clip coupons, use store reward programs to save money.

8. Make a plan and stick to it when shopping. This will keep you on budget.

Pro tip: don’t shop when you are hungry, this can lead to more impulse buying.
