Breath of Meaning: Finding Hope and Meaning
By Colin Butler, MS, CSCS, ACSM-GEI, EIM and CF WarriorOne of the hardest things about chronic illness is the uncertainty. You don’t always know what tomorrow’s going to look like, or how your body will behave. That can make everything feel shaky.
Spirituality won’t take that uncertainty away, but it can help you learn to live with it. Not by forcing false positivity, but by helping you find meaning even in the mess. Maybe you will start to see your resilience or your compassion growing. Or you might notice that you’re becoming someone who really values small joys or quiet moments of connection.
That’s hope, not blind optimism, a quiet belief that peace is still possible, even when things are hard.
At the end of the day, spirituality isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about staying open to wonder, to peace, to the possibility that even in suffering, something beautiful might still take root.
Living with chronic illness is hard. That’s the truth. But you are more than what your body can or can’t do. You are a whole person, with depth, wisdom, and spirit, and that part of you deserves care too. You don’t have to believe in anything specific. You just need space to listen inward, to connect outward, and to let your spirit guide you, one day at a time. Even in the hardest moments, you are allowed to feel
joy. You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to hold hope.
Your spirit is still here. And it matters.
