National Caregivers Month
If you’re caring for someone else, there’s a good chance you’ve gotten used to putting your own needs last. Maybe you tell yourself you’ll rest later, or that your feelings can wait, or that you’ll eat, breathe, drink water, or sit down… eventually. Caregiving is love, commitment, and grit. And it’s also exhausting. That’s the part no one wants to say out loud.
Here’s the truth that often gets pushed aside: taking care of yourself is not selfish. That is why they tell you on an airplane that you need to put your oxygen mask on first before trying to help others.
The smallest acts of self-care can make a difference. A short walk outside. Five deep breaths in a quiet room. Saying yes when someone offers help, even if part of you wants to so no. Leaving the dishes for ten minutes so you can drink your coffee while it’s still warm. These things matter.
Caregiving requires heart, resilience, and patience. But you deserve care, too. Take a breath. Let yourself be human. You’re doing the best you can, and that’s enough.
Your wellbeing must be part of the equation, not an afterthought.
Check in with yourself today. What do you need? Rest? Connection? A moment of stillness? A friend to vent to? It’s okay to ask for what supports you. You don’t have to be the strong one every second of every day.
