BreatheStrong CF is a small and growing national nonprofit that advances the physical and mental wellness of people with cystic fibrosis (CF) through programs and events providing education, direct support, and empowering opportunities. Our primary focus is on support for exercise and healthy, active lifestyles that improve the quality and longevity of life for kids and adults with CF.

Candidate Profile

The Development Director will lead our fundraising efforts and play a crucial role in sustaining organizational growth.  This individual will work independently and collaborate with the Executive Director and leadership team to build, grow, and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan.  To be successful in this role, the Development Director will cultivate relationships with key funding organizations, influential/philanthropic individuals, private foundations, commercial sponsors, and community organizations to build meaningful and beneficial partnerships.

We are seeking a goal-driven individual who enjoys building relationships, can develop and enhance systems, and can work both independently and collaboratively.  This role includes a wide range of project management, system improvement, and relationship management activities, and the ideal candidate should be a self-starter with excellent project management and communications skills, a sense of fun, a keen interest in doing good in the world, and a strong commitment to serving the cystic fibrosis community

The ideal candidate also has a proven track record of creating and implementing successful fundraising strategies that include major gifts from individual donors, fundraising events and activities, recurring donations, peer-to-peer fundraising, and grant solicitation and management. Our Development Director will build and foster relationships with key players in the CF community including clinicians, patients and families, and other organizations and businesses serving people living with cystic fibrosis.

About the Role

Our new Development Director will contribute to BreatheStrong CF in the following ways:

Grow Revenue:

  • Develops and executes annual fundraising plan based on organizational financial goals, to include donor cultivation, outreach and management, grant solicitation and events
  • Creates annual giving programs
  • Seeks to grow individual gifts and encourage recurring giving
  • Drives broad-base support through direct mail, online giving, and fundraising campaigns through social media in partnership with the leadership team and in cooperation with marketing contractors when appropriate
  • Plans and executes best-in-class fundraising events, partnering with corporate sponsors and engaging the CF community in peer-to-peer fundraising
  • Leads the grant research and grant writing and follow-through process
  • Support the Director of Programs and Operations in the inclusion of fundraising efforts in appropriate programs

Management and Organizational Contribution:

  • Develops progress and budget-related communications for the Board of Directors
  • Spearheads the expectation of giving and solicitation efforts of the Board of Directors and BreatheStrong CF staff
  • Participates in strategic planning and leads the execution of strategic initiatives
  • Maintains donor records in Salesforce
  • Represents BreatheStrong CF in conferences, meetings, and other events as beneficial

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Oversees the development and dissemination of monthly giving dashboard and prospect data against budget and expenses
  • Communicates with stakeholders to ensure responsible spending and program successes
  • Collaborates with the leadership team on related projects, events, and programs

Other Responsibilities:

  • Stays relevant in fundraising and grant solicitation trends
  • Prepares for and participates in Board meetings as required
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned

Benefits, Qualifications and Working Conditions

Time Commitment:
Full time (35 – 40 hours per week, negotiable)

Salary Range:
$70,000 – $100,000 depending on time commitment and experience

Minimum Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree and seven years related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Proven success in cultivating relationships and securing major gifts and corporate partnerships
  • Experience securing gifts of stock and other asset donations
  • Effective communication skills via presentations, conversations, and documents
  • Advanced skills in using presentation and document development software
  • Proficiency using online giving, email and social media platforms
  • Extensive success in grant writing, grant management, and partnership development
  • Ability to build and maintain long-term stakeholder relationships
  • Focused on achieving goals and strategic priorities in a timely manner
  • Ability to thrive as part of a small team, working independently while inclusive of those whose work is related
  • Recent and relevant experience working in the non-profit or association space; healthcare/disease management strongly preferred
  • Salesforce experience is preferred

Travel Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time for donor engagement

Physical Demands

  • This position requires sitting and/or standing at a desk, prolonged sitting and bending and lifting during travel, as well as extensive sitting, standing, walking, and lifting.
  • This role also requires access to stable internet, smart phone access and ability to spend several hours on the computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Standing for extended periods of time may be necessary (trade shows, conferences, marketing events, etc.)
