More Than Lungs: Keep Going
By Colin Butler, MS, CSCS, ACSM-GEI, EIM and CF Warrior and Dr. Sam Monson, Clinical Psychologist and CF PatientIf Things Feel Heavy, Reach Out
Sometimes things get overwhelming. If you find yourself pulling away from others, feeling hopeless, or thinking about self-harm, please don’t wait. Reach out to your doctor, a mental health professional, or someone you trust. You can also call or text 988 in the U.S. to connect with a counselor 24/7 through the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. There is help, and you never need to struggle alone.
Final Thoughts: Keep Talking, Keep Reaching, Keep Going
At the end of the day, being emotionally well while living with a chronic illness isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being honest, with yourself and with others. It’s okay to say, “I’m not okay right now,” or “I need support.” The people who care about you want to help, they just might not always know how unless you tell them.
And if you don’t have that support yet, it’s out there. Therapists, support groups, online communities, even hotlines, they all exist to help you carry what you shouldn’t have to carry alone.
You’re doing more than managing a condition, you’re learning to live, to adapt, and to care for yourself in incredibly powerful ways. One step, one breath, one day at a time.
