Thriving Minds: Staying Mentally Engaged with CF
By Colin Butler, MS, CSCS, ACSM-GEI, EIM and CF WarriorLiving with cystic fibrosis means facing a whole range of challenges, not just physically, but emotionally and mentally too. When you’re going through a tough patch, whether it is a flare-up, a hospital stay, or just a low-energy day, it’s easy to feel disconnected, not only from other people but even from yourself.
Let’s be honest, when your body is demanding rest or treatment is taking up your time and energy, it can be really hard to stay mentally engaged. But keeping your brain active, in whatever way feels right, is important. It’s not just about staying sharp, it’s about holding on to your sense of self, your interests, and the things that make you feel alive and curious, no matter what your body is doing.
The next element of wellness is Intellectual Wellness.
Why Mental Engagement Matters
Keeping your mind busy isn’t just something “nice to do”, it actually helps with memory, mood, focus, and even healing. It also reminds you that you’re more than your illness. When you stay connected to your interests, even in small ways, it helps you feel like you again, not just a patient.
That said, there’s no need to be hard on yourself. Some days, reading a book or tackling a tough puzzle just isn’t going to happen, and that’s totally okay. Mental stimulation doesn’t have to be intense or time-consuming. It’s not about being productive. It’s about staying mentally present and connected, in ways that feel manageable.
