Thriving Minds: You Are More than CF

By Colin Butler, MS, CSCS, ACSM-GEI, EIM and CF Warrior

One of the hardest parts of chronic illness is that it can sometimes feel like your whole identity is getting swallowed up by medical stuff. Staying engaged with things you love, whether it’s fantasy books, outer space, drawing cartoons, or writing funny reviews of terrible movies, helps protect that identity.

It reminds you: You are more than your diagnosis. You are a whole, creative, curious person. And even if you’re doing less physically, your mind is still yours, and it deserves care and attention too.

Keeping your brain engaged doesn’t mean you have to be “productive” every day. It doesn’t require intense focus or loads of energy. It just means staying connected to yourself, your interests, and the world around you.

Be gentle with yourself. Celebrate the clear-minded days. Be patient with the foggy ones. Know that whether you’re listening to a podcast, doodling on your tablet, or watching a silly show, you’re still learning, still growing, still you.

Your mind matters just as much as your body. It deserves the same kind of care, attention, and love.
