Get Ready to Travel

by Lauren Lyons, MSPT

As the weather starts to get nicer many of you may be thinking about traveling for spring break, long weekends or planning summer vacations. It’s easy to get off track with your regular schedule of treatments and exercise when you’re away from home. Here are some tips to make sure you stay strong and healthy while you travel:

  • Stay focused on your treatments. You may be exposed to more people with illnesses during travel.

  • Plan ahead and pack all necessary treatment supplies. The Pari Trek S is a portable, battery-operated nebulizer that recharges in 2 hours.

  • For international travel, bring the correct adapter and use a surge protector.

  • For flights, TSA may require a doctor’s letter for medical devices—carry Vest devices to prevent damage. Your nurse coordinator can assist with travel documentation.

  • Wash your hands well and frequently.

  • Plan for medication refrigeration during travel and at your destination.

  • Consider sterilizing equipment with microwavable sterilizer bags (if you will have access to a microwave) or disposable nebulizer cups.

  • Stick to a treatment schedule. Bring your Acapella or Aerobika for quick treatments if needed.

  • Check accommodation options for exercise—use the gym, pool, or nearby trails.

  • If you are using an indoor pool, avoid hanging out poolside for prolonged periods once you are done in the water.

  • Incorporate small exercises – take the stairs, park away from the entrance to an attraction, do a few loops of faster walking if you’re out shopping.

  • Traveling is a great time to try new activities!

  • Stay hydrated, particularly during travel and in warmer climates.

With a little planning and commitment to your routine, you can enjoy your travels while staying healthy and active. Prioritizing your treatments, hygiene, and exercise will help you make the most of your trip without compromising your well-being. Safe travels and have fun!
